How to Use This Guide
This guide answers the “what do I do next?” questions before and during your first Just Track It weekend at Barber. Use it in three passes:
- Before you leave home: Use the checklists to pack and avoid rookie failures (battery, numbers, loose items, fluids).
- At the track: Use the arrival flow and compliance sections to get through gate/registration/tech without drama.
- On track: Use the layout section for orientation, but treat the drivers’ meeting as the final authority on passing zones, flags, and session protocols.
Rule Hierarchy
When something conflicts, follow this order:
- Track management and posted track rules (including local ordinance)
- Just Track It supplemental regulations (JTI’s written rules for that weekend)
- Drivers’ meeting / chief instructor / control directives (what you are told that morning)
- This guide (best practices and “how it usually works”)
If you ever feel uncertain: ask grid staff, pit-out, or an instructor before you roll.
Just Track It Event Format
Run Groups
Just Track It operates five run groups based on experience level:
| Run Group | Description | Passing Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Novice Instructed | First-timers with mandatory in-car instruction | Straights only with point-by |
| Novice Solo | Signed-off novices driving without instructor | Straights only with point-by |
| Intermediate 1 | Developing drivers building consistency | Designated zones with point-by |
| Intermediate 2 | Experienced intermediate drivers | Anywhere on track with point-by |
| Advanced | Highly experienced drivers | Anywhere on track with point-by |
Novice Instructed and Novice Solo share the same on-track sessions. Intermediate 2 and Advanced share passing rules (anywhere with a point-by).
Novice Instruction Program
Novice instruction is mandatory until you are signed off by an instructor to drive solo. Your instructor rides in the passenger seat, providing real-time coaching on braking points, turn-in references, and throttle application. You will not be sent onto the track alone until an instructor certifies you are ready.
To prepare for your instructor: ensure your passenger seat is clear and accessible. If your car has aftermarket harnesses for the driver, factory seatbelts must remain functional for the instructor, or you need a passenger harness installed.
Session Format
Standard JTI sessions run 20 minutes with five sessions per run group throughout the day. The last two sessions of the day extend to 30 minutes with combined groups (Novice Instructed + Novice Solo together; Intermediate 1 + Intermediate 2 together; Advanced may combine with I2).
Membership
Just Track It annual membership is offered but not required to participate in events. Registration occurs through MotorsportReg.
Passing Protocol
- The slower car gives the point-by signal by extending their left arm out the window, pointing toward the passing side.
- Stay on the racing line and lift slightly off the throttle; do not brake-check or suddenly change your line.
- Blocking is strictly prohibited. If a car appears in your mirrors and stays there for more than a few corners, they’re faster than you—give the point-by at the next appropriate location.
Arrival Flow
A clean first-time flow at Barber:
- Enter via I-20 Exit 140 (Leeds) → US-78 East → right at Chevron onto Rex Lake Road → main entrance ~0.5 miles on right.
- Gate/Credentials: Check in at the Control Tower second floor outside Gate 2 → sign waiver → receive wristband and run group decal.
- Paddock: Proceed to paddock → claim a spot → unload → set up canopy/tools → apply car numbers.
- Tech Inspection: Present car, helmet, and completed tech form at tech area.
- Drivers’ Meeting: Mandatory attendance at Control Tower (typically 7:30-8:00 AM).
- Track Orientation: Full-course yellow session (no passing) for newcomers.
- Grid for Session 1: Arrive early → listen to grid workers → go out calm.

Track Layout and Corner Analysis
The 2.38-mile circuit features 80+ feet of elevation change across 16 turns—7 left-handers and 7 right-handers plus transition zones. Track width is a generous 45 feet, providing excellent passing opportunities. The layout rewards patience, precision, and car control over raw power.
The Front Section (Turns 1-4)
Turn 1 is a fast, downhill left-hander with a blind apex—intimidating for newcomers but crucial to master. Brake hard initially after the crest, then release pressure as you turn in. The tires gain grip as the car compresses at the bottom. Work up to speed gradually; minimum corner speeds exceed 60 MPH in most performance cars.
Turn 2 climbs uphill as a right-hander requiring precise positioning. Trail off the brake as you turn in, but don’t accelerate until you see the apex curbing.
Turn 3 continues the climb as a slightly off-camber left kink.
Turn 4 is a danger zone. The car gets very light over the crest—high-horsepower rear-wheel-drive vehicles can snap loose with aggressive throttle application. Let the car settle before adding power.
Charlotte’s Web (Turn 5) — The Foundation Corner
Named for the large spider sculpture in the infield, Turn 5 is the single most important corner on the circuit. This is Barber’s only true threshold braking zone and the best overtaking opportunity.
The track drops significantly between the 2 and 1 brake boards—the descent is deceptive until you walk it on foot. Begin braking on level ground with strong initial pressure, then trail brake into the turn. The corner has two apexes: clip the first, arc to the second where you apply power. A poor exit here compromises your speed all the way through Turn 7.
The Museum Complex (Turns 7-9)
This three-turn sequence near the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum trips up more newcomers than any other section.
Turn 7 is an entry speed corner—the most common mistake is over-slowing. Brake softer and earlier than instinct suggests, rolling out of the brake early. You should be hovering over the brake at the apex curbing, not pressing it.
Turns 8-9 form a corkscrew descent. Increase brake pressure as you go downhill into Turn 9, feeling the compression at the bottom before accelerating out. If you can easily reach full throttle between Turns 7 and 9, you’ve over-slowed the entry.
The Esses and Rollercoaster (Turns 10-14)
Turns 10-11 are fast, technical S-curves requiring only slight braking before entry. Maintain some steering input across the track and squeeze on power to stabilize past the Turn 10 apex.
Turns 12-14 deliver the “Alabama Rollercoaster” experience. Turn 12 begins on level ground; trail brake through while positioning for Turn 13. The compression from the hill at Turn 13 provides grip—squeeze on power and crest the hill as straight as possible. Turn 14 drops downhill; lift to transfer weight forward, then hold steady speed through the flat apex curbing.
The Final Approach (Turns 15-16)
Turn 15 is a compromise corner—sacrifice it to set up Turn 16 properly. Position about a car width from the left edge at turn-in, trail brake into the corner, but don’t track out over the seam.
Turn 16 determines your front straight speed. This off-camber left-hander punishes early throttle application. Lift at turn-in to transfer weight to the nose, then apply power carefully as the road falls away. You won’t reach full throttle until the apex. Stay right crossing the start/finish line.
Key Braking Zones Summary
| Corner | Braking Intensity | Critical Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Turn 1 | Hard initial, release into compression | Blind apex; build speed gradually |
| Turn 5 (Charlotte’s Web) | Threshold | Foundation corner; two apexes |
| Turn 7 | Soft/Early | Entry speed corner; don’t over-slow |
| Turn 9 | Moderate | Increase pressure going downhill |
| Turn 16 | Lift/Trail | Off-camber; patience on throttle |
Track Surface and Conditions
Barber underwent a complete track resurfacing in August 2019, transforming what was already a well-maintained circuit into one of the best surfaces in American motorsports. The current surface is smooth asphalt with excellent grip levels throughout. Run-off areas are wide and safe.
Driving in Wet Conditions
Birmingham receives over 54 inches of rain annually, and afternoon thunderstorms are common from May through September.
In wet conditions, the traditional racing line becomes the slipperiest surface—accumulated rubber creates a greasy film when wet. Move off-line to find grip on the “clean” pavement that’s normally avoided. Brake zones shift dramatically; begin braking 50-100% earlier than dry reference points until you calibrate grip levels.
Water accumulates in low spots around the circuit, particularly in the chicane area on the back straight. Turn 1’s compression zone pools water; Turn 16’s off-camber nature becomes significantly more treacherous when wet.
If you’re uncomfortable driving in rain, there’s no shame in sitting out a session. A parked car doesn’t crash.
Sound Compliance
Decibel Limits
Barber enforces noise limits between 101-104 dB depending on the event. The sound meter is typically located driver’s left near the Museum Turn area. Exceeding the limit results in a meatball flag (black with orange circle) requiring you to pit immediately.
Check your specific event’s published sound limit before arriving. Most vehicles with OEM exhaust systems pass without issue. If you’re running aftermarket exhaust, bring muffler inserts as backup. Loud cars should short-shift past the sound station rather than risk a black flag.
Quiet Hours
- Daily: 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM — no race engines or loud vehicles.
- Sunday: 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM — mandatory quiet hour (no track activity or PA system).
Tech Inspection
JTI Tech Process
Arrive with a completed and signed JTI tech inspection form. Tech inspection typically opens at 6:30-7:00 AM. For newcomers, arriving early provides buffer time if any issues need addressing.
Present your car, helmet, and completed tech form at the tech area near the paddock. Inspectors verify:
- Brake pad depth (50%+ remaining recommended for multi-day event)
- Firm brake pedal with no sponginess or fade
- Brake fluid recently flushed (high-temp fluid recommended)
- Tires no more than 4-5 years old with adequate tread depth
- No cracks, bulges, or cord showing on any tire
- Wheel lug nuts torqued to manufacturer spec
- Battery properly secured (no movement when shaken)
- No fluid leaks underneath the vehicle
- No engine warning lights illuminated
- Throttle returns freely when released
- Seatbelts in good condition with no fraying
- All loose items removed from interior
- Car numbers applied (8”+ on both sides)
- Working brake lights
Common Tech Failures
- Loose items in cabin (floor mats, water bottles, phone mounts)
- Expired helmet certification
- Fluid leaks (check ground under car before tech)
- Non-functional brake lights
- Missing or undersized car numbers
- Loose lug nuts or missing wheel studs
- Unsecured battery
Safety Equipment Requirements
Helmet Standards
Accepted certifications include Snell SA2020, SA2015, and equivalent FIA ratings (8859-2015 and newer). Confirm the currently accepted JTI helmet standard in your event confirmation and during on-site tech inspection.
DOT-only helmets are not accepted. Open-cockpit vehicles require full-face helmets.
Rental helmets are typically available for $25-50/day but supply is limited. Borrowing or renting for your first event is acceptable; if you continue in the hobby, invest in a properly fitted SA-rated helmet.
Required Driver Attire
- Long pants constructed from natural fibers (cotton, denim).
- Closed-toe shoes that cover the ankle (driving shoes or sneakers that won’t catch on pedals).
- Long sleeves recommended (avoid synthetic materials like polyester/nylon).
Vehicle Requirements
- Mechanically sound street-legal vehicles are permitted.
- Convertibles in novice/intermediate groups with factory roll protection are accepted; advanced groups require aftermarket roll bars and harnesses. SUVs, vans, and pickups may need pre-approval.
- Car numbers (8 inches or larger) must be displayed on both sides (painter’s tape, magnetic numbers, or decals).
Fire Extinguisher
Just Track It does not mandate fire extinguishers. However, having a 2.5 lb ABC extinguisher in your paddock area is recommended best practice.
